Warriors Balanced Attack Too Much for Dukes in 52-35 Victory

Beloit, OH- As a general rule, great teams typically have one or two players opposing coaches can circle for their team to focus their defensive efforts on to keep within striking distance as the game wears on. In recent years for the Lady Warriors, that was Sophia Gregory. Luckily for opposing coaches she is now at Youngstown State. Unfortunately, this season for opposing coaches, they need more circles, as the Lady Warriors feature one of the deeper teams the area has seen in recent history.

Coach Walt DeShields not only deploys 9-10 players regularly, but he also isn't afraid to switch up the starting line-up from game to game. The names and numbers may change, but the effort and efficiency remain the same.

As for this game, a special 10 am tip-off to enable DeShields to make it down the road to Mount Union by noon for the Purple Raiders football semi-final contest featuring his son TJ at QB for the Raiders, the Warriors welcomed conference rival Marlington. For much of the past half decade, this match-up has played a large role in taking the Girls Basketball EBC Crown.

As for the first rendition of this season, the Warriors came out strong, leading 12-4 after the opening quarter. As has been the case through much of the season, it was a balanced Warriors attack with 4 of the 5 starters scoring, led by Ellie Tucker with 4. The 2nd quarter was much of the same, as their 12-4 lead after the opening frame grew to 23-11 at the midpoint. It was Tallie Muniz leading all scorers with 8 points, while Allie Gill paced the Dukes with 4.

In the 3rd quarter, it was senior Allie Gill trying to will the Dukes back into the game, scoring 7 in the period. Despite that effort, the Warriors held an 18-point lead after 3, 40-22. Muniz was able to tack on another 5 to her total in the final quarter, bringing her total on the morning to a team high 13. Following Muniz effort was senior guard Matti Hawk with 9 on three triples. Ellie Tucker ended the morning with 6, while a triplet of Warriors netted 5; Audrey Eaton, Carter Shepherd and Presley Egli. It was Gill as the scoring leader for Marlington, ending the contest with 13.
