Villa Angela-St. Joseph protects home court with 75-65 win over Mayfield

Euclid, Ohio –  Euclid was the scene as Mayfield (0-3) traveled to challenge Villa Angela-St. Joseph high school (1-1). Joes protected their home floor with the 75-65 victory.

Villa Angela St. Joseph started out really hot from three. Back to back threes from Quandell Wright started an 11-0 run forcing a Mayfield timeout. Joes led 11-4 with around five minutes to go in the period.

Joes kept their foot on the gas. Jeremiah Martin scored back to back buckets out of the timeout. They led 20-8 with four minutes left.

Mayfield got going with a 10-0 run of their own before the quarter ended. It started with back to back threes from Xavier Vickerstaff and Mason Lathan.

Mayfield found themselves only down 24-20 with one minute to go. The quarter ended with them trailing 26-22.

Mayfield carried their momentum into the second with a quick 8-0 run with back to back threes from Angelo Newman and a layup from Aarav Ganore. Sean Shenker answered with a layup. Mayfield led 30-28 with six minutes to go in the first half.

Mayfield slowed down and both teams were tied 34-34 with 3 minutes left.

Both teams ended the quarter trading baskets. Antonio Brown scored the half’s last basket with a layup. Mayfield led at the half 41-40.

The second half opened with baskets from Wright and Lathan. Both teams hit a dry spell for a number of possessions. Around four minutes left Wright converted a much needed three point play. The game was tied 45-45.

Martin and Pierre Bradley both scored for their teams tying the game again at 47. Wright went on a 5-0 run of his own to give Joes a 52-47 lead around two minutes left in the third. The quarter closed with a basket from Andre Avery. Joes led 54-52.

The fourth started out slow with buckets from Brown and Newman. After some quiet possessions, Mayfield got a huge three from Xavier Vickerstaff. He tied the game at 60 with four minutes left.

Sean Shenker responded right back with a layup. He made a few more buckets including a timely three to put Joes up 7 around the three minute mark. He scored nine points in the quarter.

I asked Shenker about his performance tonight.

“I’m in the gym everyday, all the reps came into place," said Shenker. "The fourth quarter it’s crunchtime the game was close. I had to do what I had to do to get the team back.”

After that Joes pulled away with free throws and buckets from Brayden Daniels and Quandell Wright. Joes ended the game on top winning 75-65.

I got the chance to speak with Head Coach of Villa Angela-St. Joseph Ash Ward. He spoke highly of his team’s performance and was happy to set the tone at home tonight.

“We want to protect the village, we want to make sure we win every game at home," said Ward. "It’s such a great team feel that on any night any of our guys can kind of get hot and they feed off each other.”

Villa Angela St-Joseph will be back in action December 12th at 7 PM when they travel to take on the St Ignatius Wildcats.
