Toledo St. Johns wins nail-biter over Gilmour 65-63 in Game 3 of the Cleveland Basketball Classic



Berea, OH - On Sunday afternoon, the Cleveland Basketball Classic held their final session of games. The third game of the day was the Toledo St. Johns Titans vs the Gilmour Academy Lancers. This is the first game for Gilmour Academy this season. For Toledo St. Johns, this was their second game after winning their season opener over Springfield 59-35.


The opening tip was won by Gilmour, and senior Brandon Rose made the first shot, hitting a contested layup. With a few minutes passed in the first quarter, St. Johns got a steal, and junior Jaylen Murphy hit a step-back 3-pointer, to cut the Lancers lead to 1.


Later on in the quarter Gilmour gets a steal, leading to Brandon Rose hitting an and-one, while his defender was trying to draw a charge in the paint. However, he missed the free throw. Gilmour held a 10-5 lead. To add insult to injury, the ball was swung in the corner on the next possession, and Rose hit a big three making it 13-5 Lancers. Near the end of the first quarter, Joseph Taylor hit CJ Hornbeak on a backdoor cut for Toledo, making it a 5 point deficit. However on the other end Rose hits another triple, making the score 18-10 Gilmour. At the end of the quarter, the score was 18-11, as Marquez Frazier hit a free throw to account for the 11th point.



To start the 2nd quarter, Hornbeak grabs an offensive rebound off of a missed triple, and pivots in the paint to give Toledo another couple points. Hornbeak hits a triple in the corner, and then on the other end, Adisa Molton hits a triple to counter Hornbeak’s shot. Later on in the 2nd Race Kowalcyzyk for Toledo blocks a shot inside, and then gets his defender in the air on the other end and hits a nice mid-range jumper to bring the game within 1. At the end of the first half the score was 32-26 Toledo.



Starting the 3rd quarter, Jimmy Lawless for Gilmour hits a triple to cut the Titan lead to 3, and draws a foul on a layup on the next possession. After the 3rd quarter the score was 46-44 in favor of Toledo.


It was a closely contested 4th quarter. Toledo hits a big triple to give them a 51-47 lead. Later on, Joseph Taylor gets into the lane and hammers down a dunk, bringing the crowd to their feet and making it 53-49 Toledo lead with four and a half minutes left.


Both teams are trading punches back and forth and it looks like this one is going down to the wire to decide the game. It was tied 56 a piece with two and a half minutes left. Then Hornbeak and Taylor hit layups to help Toledo get to a 60-56 lead. After some free throws for both sides the score was 64-59 Toledo. They were able to hang on for a 65-63 win.
