Stow hangs on to beat Walsh 45-41




Stow, Ohio - On Tuesday night Walsh Jesuit came to Stow to face the Stow-Munroe Bulldogs. For the Bulldogs they came into the game 5-1 while Walsh Jesuit was undefeated at 6-0. Last season the Walsh Jesuit Warriors went 20-3 which was best in their conference.


To start off the game Stow blocked a shot inside making the student section erupt in cheers. Sean Spicer hit the first shot of the game, a triple, getting Walsh Jesuit on the board first. However the Bulldogs responded with their own 3-pointer.


AJ Pestello was able to make an and-one while also hitting the free throw. An early seven point lead for the Bulldogs. Walsh Jesuit came back to tie the game at the end of the quarter, making it a 10-10 tie after one.



To start the next quarter, Reece Raymond-Smith made a 3-pointer for the Bulldogs and immediately after, Titus Baskerville made a layup for Stow adding to their lead. Keith Rivers got a great off-ball screen, and made a catch-and-shoot mid-range shot.


Max Matta blocked a Stow shot inside the paint, and the ball went out of bounds. Matta also later hit a triple to tie the game. Spicer later helped Walsh Jesuit by getting fouled on a 3-pointer and hitting all of his free throws afterwards. The score was 24-19 at the end of the first half.


To start the second half, Raymond-Smith made a 3-pointer for the Bulldogs for the first points of the half. Spicer whipped a full court pass to Tyler Bell, and Walsh Jesuit was able to score an easy layup.



Pestello hit an and-one also hitting his free throw to cut the lead to two. Tomilson got a follow-up after a missed shot at the rim, getting another two points for Walsh Jesuit. The score after the third was 32-29, after a great block by Stow’s Raymond-Smith.


To start the fourth Raymond-Smith got the lead off of a fast break layup. The lead was going back and forth in this quarter, with no team taking a big advantage. With a bit over a minute left Stow was up by one.


Nate Boozer got fouled and hit both of his free throws with less than a minute left, giving Stow a three point lead. However Spicer got fouled on a 3-pointer but made only one of them. Nick Timberlake got fouled, and made one of two free throws. However Stow got the offensive rebound. They got fouled and hit one of two free throws giving us the final score of 45-41 in favor of Stow.


Raymond-Smith led the way for the Bulldogs with 15 points. I had a chance to speak with him after the game.
