Southeast outlasts Garfield in overtime 46-41

GARRETTSVILLE, OH- The Garfield Lady G-MEN played host to the Southeast Lady Pirates in an MVAC matchup at Garrettsville on Thursday evening. The G-MEN were coming off of a win at Champion on Monday while the Pirates were looking to bounce back from a tough loss at Crestview. After a slow start, both teams got it going in the 2nd half and Southeast was able to outlast Garfield 46-41 in overtime.


Both teams got off to a sluggish and slow start as they struggled to convert on offense. After a pair of free throws for Garfield and a free throw split by Southeast, Kristen Campbell scored on two straight possessions to give the Pirates a 5-2 lead. After a pair of Mandy Cardinal free throws for Garfield, the Pirates would score the final four points of the quarter and take a 9-4 lead after one. Campbell had 6 1st quarter points for Southeast.


Mandy Cardinal opened the 2nd quarter for Garfield hitting a three then scoring on a nice scoop layup inside to tie it up at 9-9.

Southeast would then go on a 6-0 run capped off by a nice Kristen Campbell fast break layup to make it a 15-9 Pirates lead.

Garfield would close the half strong outscoring the Pirates 7-2 capped off by a Cardinal bucket.

Southeast took a 17-16 lead into the break. Campbell led the Pirates with 8 points in the first half while Cardinal dropped in 11 for the G-MEN.



The two teams opened the 2nd half trading baskets for the first few possessions before a Campbell jumper off the glass put Southeast up 23-20 with just over five minutes to play in the 3rd.

They would push the lead to six shortly after on another Campbell score before Garfield scored five straight to make it a 27-26 game. Kayla Grope would then hit a big three ball for Southeast to close the scoring in quarter three with the Pirates leading 30-26.


Grope would open the 4th with a pair of free throws pushing the Southeast lead back out to six. Mandy Cardinal would then score back to back buckets for Garfield making it a 32-30 deficit for the G-MEN. After four straight possessions of free throws left it at a 36-33 Southeast lead, Riley Grace would nail a big three for Garfield to tie it at 36-36 late in the 4th. After Jenna Canale split a pair of free throws for Southeast putting them up by one, Mandy Cardinal split a pair herself tying the game at 37-37. After a Southeast turnover, the G-MEN had a chance to win it but could not get a shot to fall on two attempts and we headed to overtime.

The Pirates would score the first six points of the overtime period and lead 43-37 before Kolby Fresch hit a long jumper for Garfield cutting it to 43-39 with just over a minute to play.

Garfield was forced to foul Campbell who calmly knocked down a pair of clutch free throws pushing the lead back out to six with just under a minute to play. Cardinal would score for the G-MEN with 13.5 seconds to play cutting it to 45-41 but time ran out on Garfield. An Alex Hrkach free throw gave us the final score of 46-41 as the Pirates were able to put this one away in the extra period.


Kristen Campbell was sensational for the Pirates scoring 20 points and grabbing 9 rebounds. Kayla Grope chipped in with 11 points and 8 rebounds. Mandy Cardinal had a nice game for the G-MEN in the loss with 23 points and 8 rebounds.


The Pirates are now winners of seven of their last nine games moving to 11-6 on the season. The loss drops Garfield to 6-8.


The Pirates look to keep it rolling Saturday at home vs Northwestern while Garfield looks to bounce back at Smithville.
