Updated: Dec 18, 2023

Shaker Heights, Ohio — Shaker Heights was the scene as The Glenville Tarblooders (5-1) traveled to Shaker to take on the Shaker Heights Red Raiders (0-4).

Glenville started out rolling with a 6-0 run. Demetrius Rivers got the assist for a Dominic Scott layup. Scott knocked down a three as well. They led 6-0 two minutes into the game.

Shaker got going around the halfway point taking their first lead of 7-6. Kaden Aaron knocked down two mid range jumpers and Jerith Eaddy hit a three.

Scott continued his hot start while trading threes with Jace Griffin. Glenville added to their lead with another Scott layup. They led 16-10 with two minutes left.

A few baskets from both teams ended the first with Glenville leading 20-14.

Glenville’s zone defense started to slow things down in the second. Both teams struggled to find their rhythm in the quarter.

Demetrius Rivers and Rayne Williams got things rolling for Glenville with back to back buckets. They led 24-14 with four minutes to go in the half.

Glenville continued to control the rest of the period forcing turnovers from their zone defense.

Their offense slowed down until Rivers hit a three pointer at the 1:30 mark. Quinn Coggins and Theo Castro traded baskets and Glenville went into the half up 29-19.

Shaker turned the tide in the second half. Tae Smith was big for Shaker in the third quarter.

Shaker started with a 9-0 run.  Aaron started it with a three point make, and Smith ended it with a three point make. Smith hit another three around the four minute mark to put Shaker up 35-33.

A few minutes later both teams started to trade baskets. Right out of a timeout Ruel Tomlinson got an assist on a Demetrius Rivers layup.

Tae Smith answered with another three and Theo Castro responded with one of his own. Both teams were knotted up at 40 with two minutes to go.

After a few more buckets from both teams Shaker went up 44-42 going into the fourth.

Dominic Scott started to get going for Glenville, he started the quarter with a three point make. He scored again around the four minute mark but  Smith came back with another three.  Shaker led 51-49.

Fresh out the timeout Scott scored again with a three point shot. Glenville led 53-51 with 2 minutes to go.

After a couple possessions passed Shaker found themselves down 55-53. Just when they needed it Jace Griffin knocked down a three.

RJ Thomas pushed the lead to 58-55 with about 50 seconds remaining. Theo Caestro came through in the clutch with a three point shot sending the game to overtime.

Overtime started out slow but a putback bucket for Thomas and free throws from Aaron gave Shaker a 62-59 lead, 1:43 remained.

Glenville continued to fight, Scott drove to the basket scoring a huge clutch bucket. Aaron split the pair on his trip to the line leaving Shaker up 65-63.

Glenville got one final opportunity to tie the game but went one for two on a trip to the charity stripe. Shaker ended the game victorious winning 65-64.

Kaden Aaron led Shaker with 18 points, Tae Smith hit four threes and finished with 14 points. Dominic Scott led all scorers with 20.

I got the chance to speak with Shaker Head Coach Danny Young.

“I think the guys had that resiliency, they had no quit," said Young. "I think they were really thirsty and hungry for a win.. I think tonight was the most connected that I’ve seen them all season. And I think that willed us to the win.”

Shaker will be back in action at home Saturday at 7:45 PM against Cleveland Central Catholic.
