Rootstown pulls away in second half of 46-21 win over Southeast for 8th straight win

Rootstown, OH- A large crowd was on hand in Rootstown for a big Wednesday night matchup between the host Lady Rovers and Southeast Pirates. Rootstown came in at 9-1 winners of seven in a row while the Lady Pirates were off to an 8-3 start.

Rootstown won the tip and Abby White got the scoring started making the first shot of the game. The game stayed close through the first few minutes before the Rovers went on a 10-2 run started by a Sasha Nichols and one to close out the first quarter with a 14-5 lead.

Southeast started the second quarter off right with an Alexandria Morris three ball to pull them within six. After a few Rootstown free throws, the Pirates went on a 6-0 run to cut the Rover lead to 18-14 with 1:30 to play in the first half. Both teams would make one more shot each to end the half. Rootstown took a 20-16 lead into the second half. Nadia Lough had 6 points and 7 rebounds at the break.

The Rovers began to take control in the third quarter. A Melanie Plecko three to start the third quarter ignited a 7-1 Rover run that pushed the lead out to double digits at 27-17. Morris hit another three ball for Southeast, but Brooklynn McIntyre and Kylie McColloch hit back to back buckets pushing the lead back to double digits. Rootstown went on to score the final 7 points of the quarter in the last 1:40 to take a commanding 37-21 lead after three.

The fourth quarter was all Rovers, literally, as they held Southeast scoreless for the entire 8 minutes. They only put up 9 points of their own, but the game was already in their control as they wrapped up the win 46-21.

Nadia Lough was big for the Rovers with 12 points, 15 rebounds and 7 steals (unofficially). Brooklynn McIntyre chipped in with 9 points and 8 rebounds. Alexandria Morris led Southeast with 8 points.

I spoke with Rootstown coach Joe Leonard along with Lough and McIntyre after the game.
