Perry sails past Southeast in 3-0 Sectional victory



Perry OH- On Monday evening the host Perry Pirates (15-6-1) welcomed in the visiting Southeast Pirates (5-11) for a first round OHSAA Sectional matchup. Jason Pentek got the start on the bump for Perry, as Nate Muncy was called upon to take the hill for Southeast.


Jason Pentek worked quickly throw the first two Southeast batters, forcing Ian Carter into a pop out and striking out Logan West. Nate Muncy doubled off of Pentek for the first hit of the ballgame. Evan Riffle was retired by Cade Henderson at 3rd.



The Perry Pirates would come to bat with leadoff man Kyle Rhineberger. After Rhineberger is struck out, Sam Tharp induces a walk to become the first Perry baserunner. Owen McKoon´s first at-bat is fly out to center. Jason Pentek singled to center giving Perry two-on with two-outs. Logan Buehner was Muncy´s 2nd strikeout victim in the 1st as he works out of a jam.


Pentek´s 2nd inning was much cleaner, striking out Kyle Booher and Caleb Miller to quickly send us to the bottom of the 2nd. A pop-up from Logan Lavigna was caught in foul territory by Tharp at first. Nate Muncy would counter with a 1-2-3 2nd. Inducing a groundout from Luke Sivon and Ben Petruccelli before Trent Taylor´s fly out retired the side.


Joe Sharish picks up his 1st hit of the night, and with one out Zach Keto´s single put two runners on for Southeast. Pentek´s defense behind him picks him up as Sivon and Buehner both record the final two outs on fly balls. Muncy´s strong start would continue, striking out another pair of Perry hitters to send this scoreless contest into the 4th.



The Perry defense was able to pick up two outs before Lavigna was hit and Miller´s single began to stir the pot for Southeast. Sivon recorded the final out on a fly ball from Sharish. A booming start for Perry comes in the 4th. A leadoff triple from Owen McKoon gave them an early chance to score. Jason Pentek comes through by helping his own cause with a go-ahead sacrifice fly that scored McKoon. Buehner and Sivon were both retired, but Perry held a 1-0 lead.



After giving his team the lead, Pentek made quick work of the first pair of Southeast batters. West was issued a walk. An intentional walk to Muncy put two on for the Pirates. Evan Riffle reached on a costly error as it would load the bases for Southeast. The stout Perry defense once again helps Pentek work out of a jam with Kyle Boohers fly out to left. Another run would come across for Perry in the 4th. A one out single from Trent Taylor. He would reach 3rd on a two-base throwing error on a pickoff attempt from Muncy. Rhineberger reached on a costly fielding error that would allow Taylor to score a clutch run, boosting the Perry lead to 2-0. Tharp grounded out to end the inning.


The robust Perry Pirate defense helped Pentek retire the side in the 6th. After his triple in the 4th, Owen McKoon would circle the bases on a leadoff Inside-the-park-homerun scoring his 2nd run of the game and giving Perry a 3-0 advantage. A two out error wouldn´t prove to be dangerous for Southeast, as Muncy is able to end the inning.



Once again Pentek rides the ship of the Pirate defense behind him to end the game, sending Perry into a Sectional win.


Jason Pentek did his job and earned the win. Going a complete-game shutout, while only allowing four hits plus a pair of walks. He finished with four strikeouts. FINAL LINE:

Although the Perry offense was quiet for the first three innings, Owen McKoon´s triple had the ship setting sail. Trent Taylor and Jason Pentek both collected a hit, and McKoon´s two-hit performance sealed the deal.

Nate Muncy took the loss, only allowing three runs. He allowed four hits with a walk and four strikeouts.

Four hits were scattered for Southeast. Ian Carter, Nate Muncy, Caleb Miller and Joe Sharish all picked up hits for the Southeast Pirates.
