High School Football got underway in Northeast Ohio on Thursday night.
However, two of the most anticipated season openers for Northeast Ohio teams were played in Florida and Oregon.
The Chardon Hilltoppers traveled down to Florida to take on Timber Creek.
The Hilltoppers behind the outstanding running of Vinny Columbi defeated Timber Creek, 29-7.
Columbi had four rushing touchdowns in the victory.
In addition to the Hilltoppers getting the victory in Florida, the Massillon Tigers defeated the NFL Academy 35-20 in the Nike Classic at the the Nike World Headquarters in Oregon.
Leading the Tigers was standout quarterback Jalen Slaughter who threw for 387 yards and three touchdowns on the night.
Here in Northeast Ohio, the Walsh Jesuit Warriors defeated the Ursuline Fighting Irish in an extremely close contest, 37-35 at Stambaugh Stadium on the Campus of Youngstown State University.
Leading the Warriors was quarterback Keller Moten who ran for 166 yards on 24 carries and had four total touchdowns.
For the contest, the Warriors focused on rushing the ball as they gained 380 yards on 64 carries, while only throwing the ball fourteen times for 70 yards.
In other Thursday night high school football action in Northeast Ohio, the Canton McKinley Bulldogs defeated the Warren Harding Raiders, 26-19.
The Bulldogs rushing attack was led by running back Nino Hill who rushed for two touchdowns in the season opening victory. Hill had touchdown runs of 5 and 10 yards.
The Bulldogs' ground game and defense was excellent as they amassed 202 yards for the contest while only allowing the Raiders to rush for 66 yards throughout the game.
In other Northeast Ohio football action on Thursday night, it was Fairless over Sandy Valley, 21-14, while Conneaut defeated Grand Valley, 29-26.
In addition, Massillon Perry shutout Canton Central Catholic, 35-0. In Perry's victory, Kyson Walker ran for two touchdowns and quarterback Austin Mattox had a touchdown pass and also ran for a touchdown to lead the Panthers.
Northeast Ohio high school football continues this weekend as there are 111 season openers on Friday night and 7 additional opening games on Saturday.
