Brunswick, Ohio - On Tuesday night the Mentor Cardinals came to town to face the Brunswick Blue Devils. Mentor won their previous matchup against Brunswick in January 72-67. Both teams were 13-4 heading into this game.
To start the game Brunswick won the tip and Tommy Morgan hit a 2-pointer to start the game. However, Mentor hit a 3-pointer right after that taking the lead.
The score kept going back and forth, both sides not getting much ground on offense. Later on in the quarter Mentor took a solid lead and led 18-13 at the end of the first.
To start the second quarter, Matthew Biddell got a steal and that led to a dunk in transition. Mentor kept pushing on offense, while Brunswick was still trailing.
Trey Dexler hit a 3-pointer for Brunswick but Ryan Ioppolo hit his own triple to take the points right back. Brunswick was able to go on a run and tie the game back up. The game was tied at 34 a piece at halftime.
To start the third quarter, Morgan took the lead for Brunswick with a layup, their first lead since the first quarter. Tommy Morgan and Trey Drexler were on individual scoring tears making basket after basket.
A technical foul was called on Mentor, and both technical free throws were hit. Brunswick was up 55-54 at the end of the third.
To start the final period, Maxx Dickinson hit a 3-pointer extending Brunswick's lead. However, Mentor’s Kobe Frasure-Azzano got an and-one to fall making it a one possession game.
Ian Ioppolo hit a 3-pointer right after tying the game up. With two minutes left, Ioppolo finished a one-handed dunk putting the Cardinals up nine. Mentor took this one 80-66 after a big fourth quarter.
Ian Ioppolo dropped 30 points for Mentor while Trey Drexler scored 19 to lead Brunswick.
