Medina girls top Westlake 45-38

Westlake, Ohio - On a cold Monday night, the women’s teams from Westlake high school and Medina High School faced off. For Westlake, they started off the season 1-1 attempting to go above .500. As for Medina they came in 4-0 trying to keep their winning streak alive.

The stands weren’t too packed but the crowd was noisy when it came to game time. Westlake’s band was a great addition to the game, as their music was rather entertaining throughout the game. Even Westlake’s mascot was dancing around from time to time.

The tip was won by Medina and the game was underway. Medina’s Kayla Joiner got two offensive rebounds, yet the Battling Bees still ended up with zero points on those possessions. Medina later came down the floor and hit a triple to give them the first basket of the game.

Medina’s Kate Bobey blocked a triple on the defensive end and led to Olivia Klanac hitting a triple for Medina. However, Eleanor Henton hit a triple for Westlake to counter Medina’s shot. At the end of the first quarter Westlake led 7-6.

To start the second quarter Medina hit a 3-pointer to put themselves up by two. Henton later drove into the lane for an easy layup to tie the game up at nine. However, Jenna White hit a deep mid-range shot for Medina, bouncing around the rim a few times before going in. Westlake’s freshman, Ella Stanton, got a nice pass inside to convert a layup to tie it all up at eleven. Lauryn Stanton later hit a two-pointer to put Westlake up by two. At the end of the half Westlake was in the lead 15-14.

To start the third quarter, Medina hit two free throws to give themselves the lead. Lydia Tymoszcuk hit a 3-pointer, and got fouled on the shot and converted the free throw. Hailey Johnson blocked Westlake’s ball in the paint, and then Henton blocked Medina, leading to a Tymoszcuk 3-pointer. Westlake led 21-16 at this point. Medina came back into the lead and was up 26-23 with a minute left in the 3rd. At the end of the third quarter the score was 26-25 in favor of Medina.

To start off the fourth quarter Ireland Shea hit a layup to give Westlake a one point lead. Anika Norris then hit a layup in transition after a steal for the Devils. Colleen Urich converted a layup in transition for Westlake, putting them up by five. Then Medina scored on back-to-back possessions, the second one after a solid steal for an easy lane to the bucket.

Klanac iced two free throws for Medina after a blocking foul, giving them the lead. Izzy Kurka hit a mid-range jumper to cushion Medina’s lead a bit, and stole the ball on the other end. Kate Bobey hit two free throws and put Medina up by five with less than a minute left. Anika Norris missed two of two free throws for Westlake, pretty much sealing the deal on a comeback. Kate Bobey hit two free throws for Medina putting them up by seven. Final score was 45-38 in favor of Medina.

I had a chance to talk with Medina's Kate Bobey after the game.
