Stallions QB Alex McGough takes MVP Honor; Panthers Ethan Westbrook tabbed Sportsman of the Year

Canton, OH- It was a big day ahead of "The" big day in Canton at Tom Benson Stadium Friday afternoon for the USFL. It was USFL Championship Media Day, with a robust contingent of players from each Championship team and their respective head coaches coming through in groups of 3 or 4 to speak about their season leading up to the title bout and preparations for the 2023 Championship showdown.

During the last segment of the afternoon, the triad of Stallions on the stage was QB Alex McGough, Head Coach Skip Holtz, and WR Davion Davis. As their time was winding down, a special guest took the microphone to ask a pointed question. The questioner was none other than USFL President Daryl "Moose" Johnston, who took the wording of an earlier McGough answer on timing to ultimately end the 'question' with it being the time to announce McGough as the Leagues 2023 MVP.

McGough gave the following thoughts on being named MVP:

First off, thank you, that's awesome (to Moose). I really appreciate those who voted for me. At the end of the day, without those guys (motions to the back of the room where the remaining Stallions filed in to hear the announcement) I couldn't do anything, without him and him (pointing to Holtz and Davis), I would be just another guy.
I appreciate you guys (again motioning to his teammates). Offense, defense, and special teams... An Individual trophy means a lot, but I didn't come here for this, I came here to hold that (points to USFL Championship Trophy) with them (team). That's what I'm going to do tomorrow. Give me everything you got, because you're getting all that I got.

The other big award announcement that Johnston had the pleasure of announcing this afternoon was Sportsman of the Year. This award is in the same line of thinking as the NFL's Walter Payton Man of the Year Award or the Roberto Clemente Award in the MLB. It is an award voted on by the other players in the league, so the players have a great amount of pride when they are nominated. The winner of the 2023 Sportsman of the Year was Michigan Panthers Defensive Lineman Ethan Westbrook.
