Madison Tops Willoughby South in Slug fest 17-14

Willoughby, OH- The Madison Blue Streaks came out on top in a slow and wild hard hitting battle against the Rebels of Willoughby South on a time expiring field goal.

Both teams were without a few players this week, but Willoughby South was without four senior starters including their starting quarterback.

“We suffered a few injuries last week” said Coach Matt Duffy before the game. “We made some mistakes last week”, he continued, “We have a young team and four of our senior starters our out today, we only have nine seniors on the team this year.”

Madison head coach Mike Gilligan echoed some of the same sentiments.

“We are little banged up this week.” “We just have to fight through it, that’s a good team we playing over there (South)”.

Madison struck first on a 1-yard goal line run from senior running back Alexander Davis, one the first play in the second quarter, giving Madison the lead 7-0

South would answer back with at the 7:47 mark with a 2-yard score from junior Jayden Hardy evening the score at seven a piece. After some strong defense by South and some egregious and also questionable penalties by Madison, south would strike again as sophomore quarterback Luke Jensen found junior wide out Marquez Lashley streaking down the sideline and hit him for a 57-yard touchdown widening South’s lead to 14-0 heading into halftime.

Madison and South would go back and forth in the second half until Madison’s senior running back Dominic Lawrence found the corner and ran it in on a 16-yard score in the fourth quarter to tie up the game 14-14.

South would fumble the ball at their 30-yard line with less than a minute to go in the game. Madison would not be denied the win as they ran the ball and clock down to three seconds, and senior kicker Ben Amos would win the game with a 26-yard field goal as time expired.

The game was long as the referees seemed to have trouble figuring out penalties and were starting and stopping the clock at wrong times. Both teams battled to the very end, with strong defense from both sides. Big hits seemed to be the theme of the game, but in the end the Blue Streaks came away with their first win on the young season, as the Rebels fell to 0-2.

Madison will be at home next week taking on the Eastlake North Rangers, while Willoughby South will also be at home looking for their first win against the Brush Arcs. Both games have a 7:00 pm start time on September 6th.
