Mentor, Ohio- Lake Catholic finished 10-3 last season. Although they have lost a big piece of their offensive in Josh Styles, they still are looking to have a great season.
After two back to back seasons with losing records, Marty Gibbons was able to get Lake Catholic back on track last season. One of the reasons for their success was their passing attack. Luckily for the Cougars, they have their three receiving yards leaders (Ace Peterlin, Cross Nimmo and Dj Sears) returning alongside their senior quarterback Frankie Trinetti.
I got to speak with Trinetti about the importance of having a returning receiving core.
“Realizing that four of my top five receivers are back is key because I can rely on them all the time to get open. I trust them so much because I’ve played with them since freshman year, so our chemistry has just been building,” said Trinetti.
Another thing the Cougars are looking to bring into this season is their defensive tenacity. Last season they forced 14 turnovers with 12 of them being interceptions. Their big men upfront brought a lot of havoc as well. They finished the year with 25 sacks.
I got to speak to Peterlin about keeping their defensive prowess this season.
“We got great coaches out here getting on us at practice so it’s just like they don’t let us have a day off or anything like that," said Peterlin.
Head Coach Marty Gibbons also has confidence in what he’s seen from his group going into the season. They have a chance to redeem one of their three losses last season as they open this year versus Cardinal Mooney.
Coach Gibbons spoke about the opportunity and their preparation heading into week one.
“We lost a three point game last year and we lost another tight one the year before to them. I think our kids are very excited about that game and you know we’re obviously excited as a coaching staff…We’re focusing on that game quite a bit.”
Lake Catholic will be kicking off the season on August 23rd at Youngstown State University. Kick off time is 7 pm.
