Middlefield, Ohio - On Tuesday night the Cardinal Huskies played host to the Kirtland Hornets. Cardinal came in at 2-2 trying to get a win streak going. As for Kirtland, this was their first game of the season trying to start the season off strong.
To start the game off, Kirtland won the tip, but missed their first shot. A bit later, Jacob Bean was easily able to drive into the lane after a nice inbounds pass. Then on a few possessions later Tyler O’Brien made a 3-pointer on the right wing. Bean was able to run in transition, and scored a triple on the left wing giving Cardinal a six point lead. Dan Alfieri had a nice spin move in the paint for the Hornets and scored a layup. Nick Barisic got his own offensive rebound and layed it back in to cut Cardinal’s lead to one. At the end of the first the score was 16-15 with Cardinal in the lead.
At the start of the second quarter Paul Gall III scored a contested layup for Cardinal. Barisic grabbed an offensive board and converted a layup with ease, but Bean scored a 3-pointer on the other end. Vince Carriero was able to steal an inbounds pass, and passed to Owen Mueller to give Kirtland another two points on the layup. Cardinal still led 30-27 at the half.
To start the second half, Kirtland scored four points in a row after a layup and an inbounds steal leading to another layup. However, Bean scored a 3-pointer from way outside to regain the lead. Jack Green hit a nice side-stepping mid-range shot giving Kirtland the lead back.
Troy Domen had the play of the night, hitting his defender with a crossover that made him fall to the ground, then hitting a 3-pointer for Cardinal. Domen later blocked the ball out of bounds and Kirtland later turned the ball over. Domen played out of his mind in the third quarter hitting an and-one and sinking the free throw. The score was 50-46 Cardinal after three.
To start the final period Gall III hit a layup for Cardinal to give them the first points of the period. Gino Blasini was able to score an and-one giving Kirtland the lead. With about three minutes left the game was tied. Domen hit a nice step-through shot to get the lead. However Blasini hit a triple to give Kirtland the lead. Domen hit two free throws to take back the lead. Owen Mueller hit a layup in transition after a steal and give Kirtland back the lead.
Vince Carriero went to the line for Kirtland and made both putting them up by three. Bean missed his shot, leading to a rebound by Kirtland. Carriero got fouled made both free throws once again putting Kirtland up by five. O’Brien hit a 3-pointer after an offensive rebound bringing Cardinal within two. Cardinal gets the ball after a Kirtland turnover but misses the final shot. Kirtland takes this one 70-68.
