Middlefield, OH- On Thursday evening the Cardinal Huskies softball team took on the Bristol Panthers in a high scoring scrimmage contest.
The scoring barrage began early with the Panthers plating a pair runs on a double by Gibson. Later on for the Huskies, Morgan Soltis led off the inning with her first career home-run making an early statement. This was followed by two runs scored on errors giving the Huskies a 3-2 lead to end the opening frame. It was a quick second inning with no runs allowed as the Huskies went down 1-2-3 to send us to the third.
After retiring the side after a base hit by the Panthers, the Huskies added on big time scoring seven in the bottom of the third. With two on, Daktoa Gillispie drove in a run followed by Shawna Coleman and Soltis driving in one run each. A bases loaded walk scored another run and moments later Leichtman drove in another, putting the Huskies up 9-2 and in full control. Cardinal added one more with Grant scoring on a stolen base.
In the top of the fourth the Panthers scored three, cutting the Huskies lead in half. A line drive up the middle and pair of fielding errors. The Panthers Workman and Atdinson helped score two of the three runs in the frame all with two outs, the frame later ending with Maggie Grant retiring the side via strikeout. A walk and a steal by Lew set up Soltis to drive in another run, extending their lead. Following a pop out to the pitcher that turned into a double-play with the bases loaded, Leichtman came up huge again by crushing a 3-2 pitch to plate two more Huskies runs. They later on went on to score on the same play on fielding and throwing errors, running their lead up to nine.
The Huskies lead had grown to 14-5 in the top of the 5th. Grant was replaced by Gillispie to close it out. In a last ditch effort for the Panthers, they´re able to to bring five runs across. It was a big inning highlighted by two walks and hit-by-pitch to load the bases right off the bat. In the 5th with nobody out the Panthers pounce on the Huskies by drawing another walk to put the first run of the frame on the board. Workman for the Panthers drove in a pair on a base hit to shallow left cutting the lead down to 6. Bristol later plated two more in the 5th via a base hit, before Gillispie slammed the door on the Panthers comeback attempt earning her 3rd K of the inning. The Huskies took the scrimmage 14-10.
