Berea, OH- The first annual Cleveland Basketball Classic kicked off day two with five action packed matchups on the men’s side at Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium on the campus of Baldwin Wallace University. The first matchup was between the Hawken School Hawks and Padua Franciscan Bruins.
Padua jumped out to an early 8-4 lead to start the game in the first quarter behind a monster start from sophomore guard Riley Cervenka and 6’7” senior post player Jesse Hayes. Hawken stormed back with the help of junior big man David Dettelbach and junior guard Taj Carver to tie it at 12. Padua never saw the lead again. The Hawks ended the quarter on a 5-1 run to lead 17-13.
In the second quarter, the Hawks started to gain more control of the game behind the dominant inside game of Dettelbach. He ended the first half with 8 points to keep Hawken ahead 32-25.
In the second half, Padua wouldn’t go away easily as Hayes started to battle Dettelbach in the post in a sort of mano a mano battle. In the end, Hawken had too many shots dropping from Darren Hill, Danny Grajzl, and Carver for Padua to deal with as the Bruins fell 58-49 to the Hawks. Both Hayes and Dettlebach led their perspective teams with 16 points.
