Hathaway Brown tops CVCA in 51-50 thriller on Senior Night

Shaker Heights, Ohio - On Wednesday night Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy traveled to Shaker Heights to face off against Hathaway Brown. Both girl’s teams had great records, CVCA being 13-2 while Hathaway Brown was 13-5. Today was a big night for Hathaway Brown as they were celebrating senior night.

Winning the tip was Hathaway Brown but they turned the ball over soon after. Jermani Jones hit the first shot of the game for Hathaway Brown, a layup after a transition pass. However, Joi Williams hit an and-one for CVCA right after this.

Kylie Bettinger hit a corner 3-pointer, also for CVCA, giving them the lead. At the end of the first quarter Hathaway Brown held a slim 16-15 lead.

To start the second quarter both sides hit 3-pointers one right after each other. In this quarter, both sides were a bit slow-paced on offense. The score at halftime was 25 a piece.

To start the second half Jones hit a mid-range shot to take the lead for Hathaway Brown. Afterwards, Williams hit a 3-pointer for CVCA which was her second shot of the game. CVCA took the lead later after a transition layup by Hadley Hadju and was up by one.

After another CVCA triple, Hathaway Brown took a timeout, and CVCA looked like they had the momentum. Soon after the timeout, Hathaway Brown tied the game with two layups back to back.

Gia Casalinova hit two-and-one layups within a minute’s time, and took the lead until Hathaway Brown hit a shot to tie the game at the end of the third quarter. The score was tied up at 40 heading to the fourth.

To start the final period, Hathaway Brown got the lead after a Teagan Clark layup in transition. Williams took the lead right back after she hit another 3-pointer, her third of the night. The lead kept going back and forth with no team taking more than a marginal lead at any point.

With about a minute and a half left CVCA was up by only one so this one looked like it would come down to the wire. Piscetelli went to the free throw line, and made one of two shots. Piscetelli then went back to the charity stripe after Hathaway Brown picked off a pass, and then she proceeded to make one of two free throws as Hathaway Brown pulled out a 51-50 win.

For Hathaway Brown, Piscetelli led the way with 13 points and Teagan Clark had 12 points. Casalinova led the way for CVCA with twenty points while Joi Williams chipped in with 12 points.

I talked with Hathaway Brown coach Steve Klug after the big win.
