Gilmour outlasts Walsh in a closely contested 48-46 win

Gates Mills, Ohio - On Wednesday night the girl’s Gilmour Academy Lancers were at home to face the Walsh Jesuit Warriors. The Lancers were 14-3 entering this game while the Warriors were 14-4.

Winning the tip was Walsh Jesuit and Helen Holley picked off a pass not too long into the first period. Both sides were full-court pressing to start the game, which paid dividends for Gilmour. The Lancers started the first four minutes of the first quarter up 10-2.

Nicci Finazzo hit a step-back 3-pointer for Gilmour continuing their hot streak. The 6'1" Helen Holley was already dominating both the offensive and defensive boards for Gilmour, and she helped lead the Lancers to a 15-7 lead at the end of the first.

To start the second Holley blocked a floater inside, but that didn’t lead to any Gilmour points. Later on Holley posted up inside and kicked it out to Finazzo for a 3-pointer in the corner.

Katie Puletti got an and-one, after drawing the foul, and putting up a prayer of a shot that fell through the net. The score at the end of the first half was 23-21 in favor of Gilmour.

To start the second half, Walsh Jesuit took the lead with two layups and kept adding to their lead. The Warriors were up by six at one point, and kept the pressure up the rest of the quarter. The score at the end of the third was 34-30 Walsh Jesuit.

To start the final period, Holley went coast-to-coast after a rebound and hit an and-one floater for the first points of the fourth. Gilmour drew a charging foul, which led to a 3-pointer by Puletti.

With less than a minute left, Gilmour had a five point lead after an offensive put back from Holley. It looked like it might be over, but Taylor Angielski hit a 3-pointer at the top of the key cutting the Lancers lead to two. However Walsh Jesuit couldn’t get the stops necessary and Gilmour hung on for a 48-46 win.

Holley led the way with 19 points for Gilmour while Molly Goodrich and Cesily Sutton both had 13 points for Walsh Jesuit.
