GARRETTSVILLE, OH- We were back at James A. Garfield High School on Friday night as the G-MEN boys welcomed in the Southeast Pirates. The Pirates came into this one looking to snap a two game losing streak. Garfield meanwhile had dropped the previous three contests after their 9-1 start to the season. Both teams needed a win in a big way. The G-MEN used a 19-0 run to start the 4th quarter to run away with a 71-48 win.
After a Garfield bucket by Preston Gedeon to open the scoring, Southeast went on a quick 7-0 run with back to back baskets from Cohen Richardson and a score inside by Joe Sharish to take a 7-2 lead forcing a G-MEN timeout.
Garfield would then go on a 7-2 run of and tie the game up 9-9 on a Cade Rock putback.
The Pirates would take a 13-12 advantage into quarter two.
The G-MEN would come out strong to start the 2nd scoring the first seven points including a Gedeon three ball to jump ahead 19-13.
The teams would pretty much play even up the rest of the quarter with Garfield holding a 23-18 lead at the half. Preston Gedeon and Cade Rock had 6 points a piece to pace Garfield while Cohen Richardson dropped in 9 points for the Pirates.
Gedeon and Richardson opened the 3rd quarter trading baskets before Brandyn Bogucki hit a corner three for Garfield giving them their biggest lead of the game at 29-20.
Southeast would come right back as Braedyn Walden nailed back to back three balls to pull within three at 29-26. After a Cade Rock score for Garfield, Joe Sharish converted an and-one opportunity and Richardson dropped in two to tie the game at 31-31. Garfield went on a 7-2 run late to open up a 46-39 lead before Walden stole the ball off a Garfield rebound and dropped in a shot before the 3rd quarter buzzer. The Pirates trailed 46-41 heading to the 4th.
The game turned fast top open the 4th. Garfield blitzed the Pirates for a 19-0 run to start the quarter spearheaded by Gedeon, Nick Edic and Aidan Hill to take a 65-41 lead. Everything was falling offensively and they clamped down defensively in a big way to put the game away.
A Caden Dillon three ball stopped the bleeding but the damage had already been done. Garfield outscored the Pirates 25-7 in the 4th to take the 71-48 win.
Preston Gedeon led the G-MEN with 24 points and five three balls. Cade Rock chipped in 8 points, 12 rebounds and 3 blocks while Nick Edic had 10 points and 7 rebounds. Cohen Richardson led the Pirates with 17 points.
Garfield will look to start another winning streak on Tuesday when they host Liberty while Southeast looks to snap their losing streak vs Champion.
