Field outlasts Ravenna in 6-3 defensive battle

Ravenna, OH- The Field Falcons traveled to Portage Community Bank Stadium on Friday night looking to bounce back from a tough loss to Streetsboro last week and grab some momentum heading into the postseason. The scrappy Ravens were looking to finish the regular season at .500 and wrap up a postseason berth.

The Falcons received the ball first and got off to a strong start. After a Victor Brown carry for 4 yards on first down, Drexal McAmis took over with 6 straight carries for 61 yards, the last of which was a 2-yard plunge into the end zone for a TD. The PAT was blocked giving Field a quick 6-0 lead.

Ravenna was able to move the ball on their first possession into Falcons territory. They faced a 4th and 8 from the Falcons 47 yard line. Coach Coman elected to go for it. CJ Ross hit Trey Carter close to the first down marker, but he was brought down just short turning the ball back over to Field.

The next three possessions turned into punts, the last of which was blocked by Ravenna putting them in great field position at the Falcon 13 yard line. CJ Ross completed a 10 yard pass to Bryant Thompson on 3rd an 9 taking them down to the Falcons 2 yard line where they would setup 1st and goal. The Field defense would then come up with an impressive collection of stops pushing Ravenna backwards holding them to -2, 0 & -1 yards on three straight plays. The end result was a missed field goal turning it back over to Field and blowing a golden opportunity to put points on the board.

Field was able to drive into Ravens territory after a big pass play of 47 yards by Peyton Anderson to Mikai Peeple, but missed a 32-yard field goal to keep it a 6-0 game.

Ravenna threatened right before the half as Ross hit Carter on a 42 yard hookup into Falcon territory, but a last play heave towards the end zone was picked off by Falcons DB Cedric Martin. Field took the 6-0 lead into halftime.

After a Ravenna 3 and out to open the 3rd, Field was on the move again before a big sack by Ravens DB D'Anthony Allen forced a punt that was once again blocked by the Ravens after a bad snap. They were setup at the Falcons 39 yard line. A 27 yard completion from backup QB Mark Miller to Bryant Thompson setup a Jose Carpenter 29-yard field goal cutting the Falcons lead to 6-3. That would be the score after three.

Neither team was able to get anything going in the fourth. Ravenna had one last opportunity with the ball on their own 44 yard line and 4:00 remaining in the game. Ross was able to hit Thompson for a 13 yard gain into Falcons territory. After an incompletion on first down, Thompson was hit for a big 8 yard loss in the backfield that brought up a 2nd & 18 situation. Another incomplete pass followed by a game clinching sack from Falcons DL Logan Roberts forced a turnover on downs. From there Drexal McAmis was able to run out the clock as the Falcons escaped Ravenna with a hard fought 6-3 win.

Field ends the regular season at 8-2 while the Ravens finish 4-6. Both await to hear their first round opponents for the start of the OHSAA State Playoffs next Friday.
