Collin Melvin’s nine point fourth quarter pushed Bay Village past Benedictine 61-51

Bay village, Ohio- The Bay Village Rockets (11-11) hosted the Division IV Sectional Final versus Benedictine (10-12) . The Rockets were coming off of a two game losing skid looking to get back into the win column. They were successful in doing so as they advanced to the next round.


Both teams were able to match intensity for the better part of the first. They were knotted at 13 with one minute to go. The quarter ended with the Rockets leading 16-15.


The second quarter started out slower, but both squads started trading near the end. Caleb Rinehart scored at the rim in transition, extending Bay Village’s lead to 23-20 halfway through the second.


The Bengals started to get offense going. A layup from Joey Pomnean tied it at 26 with one minute to go. A few possessions later Kamari Carter gave them a lead of 30-28 with a layup. Wondu Evans answered for Bay Village with a three. The half closed with Bay Village up 31-30.



The Bengals came out of the half with a sense of urgency. They started to get out and run in transition while giving the Rockets problems on the glass. They led 40-36 around the 3:30 mark during a timeout.


Bay Village came out of the timeout with an outburst. Collin Melvin converted an and one layup and hit a three. Ethan George hit a three also. The Rockets led 45-42 with two minutes to go. Tyree Williamson hit a three tying it at 45 to go into the fourth.


Max Cockburn opened up with five straight points. Him and Melvin hit back to back threes. They led 53-47 with 4:30 heading into a timeout.


From there Bay Village began to shut the door on Benedictine. They contained drives to the rim while managing the rebounding battle.


“Down the stretch we just hit our shots. In those first three quarters we were missing a little bit, not getting rebounds. Once we started getting rebounds and stops on d, it came on offense,” said Melvin.

Melvin scored two consecutive buckets out of the timeout. The Rockets led 57-47 with one minute to go.  He had nine in the quarter.


The Rockets ended on top 61-51. Their opponent in the next round is yet to be determined.
