Coming fresh off a WRC Championship that saw Chardon finish 23-3, Head Coach Alison Fisher has hopes of guiding her team to a repeat. With 7 seniors set to return, lead by Northern Illinois commit Emma McCartney. Their quest for back-to-back conference titles begins August 24th as the Hilltoppers travel to face the Comets of Solon. A quick WRC matchup in Mayfield against the Wildcats opens up conference play for Chardon. Following a stop at the Bishop Watterson tri-match, 9 of the next 12 Hilltopper games come against WRC opponents. They went an undefeated 12-0 a season ago vs. conference opponents. A feat they all are setting out to accomplish again in 2023. They end this season on the road against Riverside, potentially playing for the WRC crown. Between the stretches of conference games the Hilltoppers are set to face North Ridgeville, Nordonia, Lake Catholic and Massillon Washington. Chardon has two scheduled tri-meets. They host one on August 26th against Edgewood and Jefferson. A long trip to the states capital awaits the Hilltoppers on September 2nd as Bishop Watterson hosts Chardon and Gilmour Academy.
I spoke with seniors Grace Legan, Emma McCartney and Skylar Toth about this season.
Grace reminisced on winning conference last year, and what it's going to take in order to repeat. She's coming off an injury from last season, I asked her what the mentality is for herself as she hopes to play a full season healthy.
Skylar shared what it was like to be called up sophomore to fill in and what she's taking into this year from the past couple season. She talked about her goals and mentality for the year with me.
Emma and I talked about her commitment, her message she's leaving behind for the teams to come in the future. Finally she shared the things she's looking forward to most this season.
And lastly I talked with Hilltopper Head Coach Alison Fisher about defending the WRC title, along with her teams mentality for the year, as well as her relationship with this years senior class.
