Cardinal Huskies pull out a thrilling 60-58 win at Garfield

Garrettsville, OH- JAG Fieldhouse was the scene on Tuesday evening for a matchup between the visiting Cardinal Huskies and host Garfield G-MEN. Cardinal came in at 3-3 looking to get over the .500 mark while Garfield was trying to snap a two game losing streak.

Garfield wasted no time getting off to a quick start as they went up 6-0 in the first minute and 40 seconds prompting a timeout by Huskies coach Jon Cummins. He was able to settle his team down as they went on to outscore the G-MEN 6-4 to end a low scoring 1st quarter. Garfield led 10-6.

The second quarter saw both teams go back and forth even up with Garfield maintaining a small lead throughout. It was a big quarter for G-MEN sophomore guards Aidan Hill and Preston Gedeon who combined for 11 of their 17 second quarter points including a three ball from each. Garfield held a 27-24 lead at the half. Gedeon led all scorers with 11 at the half. Troy Domen had 9 points for Cardinal.

The third quarter was much of the same story. Tightly contested small leads for the G-MEN. Midway thru the quarter Garfield had taken a 5 point lead after a Vinnie Grandizio three, but Cardinal answered right back Ethan Detweiler nailed a deep ball of his own to cut the G-MEN lead to 34-32. Garfield would then put together a 7-2 run with Jackson Sommer accounting for 5 of those points. They held a 41-34 lead, their biggest of the game, with just over three minutes to play in the third.

But just like they had all night the Huskies fought right back as Domen hit a three and then split 1 of 2 free throws after getting fouled on a drive to the hoop. The Huskie deficit was back to 3 in less than a minute. Cardinal scored the final four points of the third quarter and Garfield held a 45-44 lead heading into the fourth.

The G-MEN started the fourth quarter strong after a Nick Edic bucket and a pair of free throws by Gedeon pushed the lead back up to five at 49-44. Gedeon also hit a pair of three's the last of which put the G-MEN up 55-49 with just over three minutes to play. The pesky Huskies then converted back to back three balls by Detweiler and Domen to tie the game at 55 with 1:18 to play. Jackson Sommer answered back with a big three of his own with 55 seconds to play putting Garfield back up 58-55. Jacob Bean then hit a huge three for Cardinal tying the game at 58. After an empty G-MEN possession, it was Bean again with a short jumper to give the Huskies their first lead of the night at 60-58 with 15 seconds to play. Garfield had one last opportunity to tie or go for the win, but they were unable to convert as Sommer's three attempt came up short and Cardinal hung on for a 60-58 comeback win.

Troy Domen led the way for the Huskies with 19 points while Ethan Detweiler chipped in 16 of his own. Big man Paul Gall III grabbed 9 rebounds. Preston Gedeon paced the G-MEN with 21 points.

I talked with Troy Domen after the game about the big win.
