The Cardinal Huskies hosted tryouts today as head coach Anne Mann works to finalize her Varsity, JV and Freshman roster.
The Huskies put out a sub .500 season for the first time in nearly a decade in 2022. Despite finishing the season with double-digit wins with 10, they also finished with 14 losses. A down-year for the Cardinal Volleyball team as they had graduated big classes in years prior. It was one of the younger Varsity teams Cardinal has seen. With it came experience and growing pains. Coach Mann and her team look to turn a new leaf and turn the experience and learning into success. The Huskies redemption arc begins Saturday August 19th with a tri-meet between the Huskies, West Geauga Wolverines and Garfield Lady G-Men. The first Huskies Conference game comes September 12th as they host the visiting Grand Valley Mustangs. The matchup against Grand Valley is the opener of conference games 10 of their last 13 games are all conference games, with non-conference matchups against Bristol, Bedford and Conneaut sprinkled in the mix. On the bright side for the Huskies, with only 3 seniors graduated from last season, it opens the door to more opportunities for shoes to be filled, along with those who played varsity last year having the ability to help teach those stepping into varsity roles this season.
I spoke with 2nd year head coach Anne Mann about the transition of a new coach trying to build relationships with new people year in and year out. I also spoke with incoming junior Morgan Csontos about what her experience from last season and how it's going to help with this season.
The next interview was with sophomore Ali Puruczky. Playing varsity as a freshman along with JO volleyball has her poised to be a key player for the Huskies once again.
The final interview was with Senior Emma Geesling, she shared thoughts on the offseason and hopes for this upcoming season along with her message for the Cardinal Volleyball teams to follow.
Throughout the course of tryouts, I was around capturing footage of the drills Coach Mann had running as we wind down the summer.
