Buffalo Bulls Outlast Akron Zips in High-Scoring Thriller, 41-30

In a thrilling MAC showdown, the Buffalo Bulls secured a 41-30 victory over the Akron Zips, withstanding a fierce Akron rally that saw the Zips nearly erase a 31-point deficit in the fourth quarter. Buffalo’s explosive start and timely defensive plays ultimately proved enough to fend off Akron’s comeback efforts, as the Bulls held on to improve their season record.

Buffalo established control early in the game, leading 38-7 heading into the fourth quarter. Quarterback CJ Ogbonna was a key part of Buffalo’s offensive push, completing 17 of 29 passes for 210 yards and two touchdowns, while also adding 63 yards and a rushing touchdown on eight carries. Al’Jay Henderson, meanwhile, paced Buffalo’s ground attack, totaling 107 yards on 18 carries with a score. JJ Jenkins highlighted the Bulls’ receiving corps with five catches for 57 yards and a spectacular one-handed touchdown grab.

Despite Buffalo’s dominant performance through three quarters, Akron launched an inspired fourth-quarter comeback. Zips quarterback Ben Finley led the charge, throwing for 354 yards and four touchdowns on 22-of-41 passing. Finley connected multiple times with receiver Adrian Norton, who recorded six receptions for 98 yards and two touchdowns, helping to close the gap. Akron’s defense also stepped up, with linebacker Bryan McCoy contributing 11 tackles to anchor the Zips’ efforts in stalling Buffalo’s offense down the stretch.

The comeback appeared nearly complete after Akron’s offense scored multiple touchdowns and narrowed the score to 38-30. But with Akron surging, a critical mistake on special teams shifted the momentum back to Buffalo. Akron muffed a punt late in the game, which the Bulls recovered deep in Zips territory. Buffalo capitalized on the turnover, adding a field goal to extend their lead to 41-30 and ultimately secure the win.

Buffalo’s defensive leaders also played a significant role in staving off Akron’s rally. Linebacker Shaun Dolac led the Bulls with 12 tackles, while Red Murdock added 11 of his own. Defensive back Marcus Fuqua’s interception earlier in the game further disrupted Akron’s offensive rhythm, providing Buffalo with early leverage in what became a critical play down the stretch.

This victory marks a gritty performance for Buffalo, who needed all phases to ultimately close out the Zips. With strong individual showings and the resilience to handle a late-game surge, the Bulls demonstrated both their depth and determination as they look forward to their next conference challenge.
