Macedonia, Ohio- Nordonia High School is where this powerhouse D4 regional final matchup took place between Glenville (10-3) and Perry (13-1). In a tough battle where defense controlled the game, an overtime score earned Glenville the regional final win.
Both teams held strong defensively early. Glenville tried to get Chris Newell going. Chuck Thomas got a stop for Perry to force the first punt of the game.
Glenville’s defense also defended the run well. They forced a three and out on Perry’s first possession also.
Near the end of the quarter the Tarblooders got big gains on the ground. Romell Phillips ran for 48 yards and LaMarques Greenwood followed it up with a 38 yard gain. Glenville closed the quarter up 6-0.
The Tarblooders opened the second with a goal line touchdown for Newell. Christian McAlpine recovered a fumble and got them the ball right back. Perry answered the call and recovered a fumble of their own the next play.
Perry’s defense continued to contain big plays. They forced a turnover on downs after Trent Taylor sacked Greenwood.
Perry started to move the ball as Luke Sivon and Vince Tomasic caught double digit receptions. Unfortunately, a miscue between Walter Moses and Owen McKoon forced a turnover on downs.
Glenville ran the clock out and went into halftime leading 6-0.
Perry came out firing with a long seven minute drive. Gains from Carter Hopkins and a fourth down conversion reception catch from Sivon set up a score. Hopkins caught a ten yard touchdown, the game was tied at six.
Glenville answered with a positive drive of their own. Greenwood got several big runs, one that even extended the drive on third down. They got closer to the red zone and the quarter ended with both teams tied.
Glenvile got into the red zone to start out the fourth quarter. A sack from McKoon prompted a field goal attempt which was no good.
Both defenses continued to make things hard for the opposing offenses. Glenville got the ball back and worked their way back into enemy territory after a 23 yard gain from Greenwood. They ended with another empty drive after an incomplete pass on third down.
Perry’s offense couldn’t take advantage and ended another drive with a three and out. Glenville got the last possession of the quarter but couldn’t score, forcing an overtime period.
Perry opened overtime with the ball, a crucial penalty gave them a third and 32. Jamir Perez came away with a huge sack. They threw the ball on third down and it was incomplete.
Glenville got the ball and seized the game with one play. Newell scored a 20 yard walk off touchdown. Glenville came out on top, twelve to six.
“I had got some great blocks from my receivers and my offensive lineman," said Newell. "My offensive lineman pulled and they sealed it right off and I just cut off them and I cut off the receivers…I just want to give kudos to my teammates.”
Glenville moves on to face Sandusky Perkins in the State semifinals next Friday.
